Medical safety note

Instructions from your own surgical or prescribing team take priority over this general guide. Contact local emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Key takeaways

  • Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is a prescription medicine, not a self-directed supplement.
  • Eligibility, dose changes and monitoring must be planned by a clinician.
  • Medication, endoscopic therapy and bariatric surgery have different indications and follow-up needs.
01

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. This guide focuses on adults. In the European Union its authorised uses include insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes and weight management in adults who meet defined BMI and health-risk criteria, alongside diet and physical activity.

It acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors. These pathways influence blood-glucose control and appetite, but the medicine is not a substitute for nutrition, activity or clinical monitoring.

02

How is it used?

Mounjaro is prescription-only and is injected once weekly under the skin. The dose and any increase must be planned by the prescriber after reviewing medical history, other medicines and treatment response.

Do not copy another person’s dose, use an unverified pen or change treatment because of social-media advice.

03

Where can I find the Mounjaro patient leaflet?

The EMA product-information PDF includes patient leaflets for different presentations, including single-dose pens, vials and KwikPen. Find the leaflet matching your pack; device instructions are not interchangeable.

The link below is an English-language EU document, not a Turkish leaflet or confirmation of Turkish authorisation. Ask your pharmacist for the current local leaflet supplied with your medicine.

04

Common side effects and when to get help

The most commonly reported effects are gastrointestinal, particularly nausea and diarrhoea. Constipation and vomiting may also occur, and symptoms are often more noticeable when the dose changes.

  • Contact the treating team if vomiting prevents fluid intake or signs of dehydration develop.
  • Severe abdominal pain that does not settle, especially if it spreads to the back with or without vomiting, needs urgent medical assessment for possible pancreatitis. Do not dismiss it as routine nausea.
  • Difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat needs emergency care.
  • Previous pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and significant digestive problems should be discussed before treatment.
05

Pregnancy, contraception and planned procedures

Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy. Discuss pregnancy plans and contraception with your prescriber; if pregnancy is possible, contact a healthcare professional promptly. If you take the contraceptive pill, ask about additional protection when starting treatment or increasing the dose: UK MHRA advice specifically addresses this.

Tell your surgeon and anaesthetist that you use tirzepatide before general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Delayed stomach emptying can affect aspiration risk. Your team should give individual instructions; do not choose a stopping interval yourself.

06

Medication or bariatric treatment?

Medication and bariatric procedures are not interchangeable products. The right pathway depends on BMI, related disease, previous attempts, eating patterns, reflux, medication tolerance and the person’s ability to continue long-term follow-up.

A structured assessment may recommend medication, a procedure, combined care or no treatment at the present time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mounjaro approved for weight management?

In the European Union, tirzepatide is authorised for weight management in adults who meet defined BMI and health-risk criteria, alongside diet and activity.

Can I change the dose myself?

No. Dose initiation and escalation should follow the prescriber's plan and your treatment response.

What are common side effects?

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting are commonly reported.

Where is the official Mounjaro patient leaflet?

The EMA PDF linked in this guide includes English EU patient leaflets. Choose the section matching your pack, and ask your pharmacist for the current local leaflet.

What if I miss a dose?

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed injection. Check the missed-dose instructions in your own pack leaflet or ask your pharmacist or prescriber if you are unsure.

Is Mounjaro an alternative to surgery?

Sometimes medication is the appropriate pathway, but it is not a direct substitute for surgery. A clinical assessment should compare the options.
