Post-Surgery Nutrition Guide — Phase by Phase
⚠️ Always follow your surgeon’s and dietitian’s specific recommendations. This guide is based on Istanbul Obesity Center’s official patient nutrition guide.
1
Clear Liquid Diet
Weeks 1–2 after surgery
•Allowed: water, sugar-free herbal teas (mint, chamomile, linden, fennel, sage), clear fat-free broths (chicken, beef, vegetable), sugar-free gelatin, low-sugar isotonic drinks
•Sip slowly — do not exceed 200 ml per hour during the first 2 weeks
•Target at least 1.5 litres of total fluid per day
•No carbonated drinks, alcohol, or high-sugar liquids
•Protein shakes are essential for the first 2 weeks to prevent muscle loss and support healing
•Tip: add apple slices, cinnamon bark, fresh mint or basil to water for flavour. Brew fruit teas and freeze as ice cubes
2
Pureed Diet
Weeks 3–4 after surgery
•Allowed: pureed vegetables (carrot, zucchini, potato), pureed lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish), low-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed banana, oatmeal, semolina
•Eat slowly and chew thoroughly — aim for 20–25 minutes per meal
•Limit portions to 2–3 tablespoons per meal; aim for 5–6 small meals daily
•Avoid spicy, acidic, and salty foods
•Do not drink 30 minutes before or after meals
3
Soft Foods
Weeks 5–6 after surgery
•Allowed: soft cooked vegetables (mashed peas, cooked spinach), tender lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish), soft fruits (banana, melon, peach), low-fat dairy, eggs (boiled, scrambled, omelette)
•Prioritise protein at every meal to prevent muscle loss
•Stop eating immediately when you feel full — never force yourself
•Avoid high-fat and sugary foods
•From day 10: ask your doctor about starting light swimming. Avoid strenuous exercise for 1 month
4
Transition to Solid Foods
6 weeks and beyond
•Allowed: lean proteins (chicken, fish, lean red meat), fresh steamed/boiled vegetables, lower-sugar fruits, whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat), low-fat dairy
•Always eat protein first at every meal — then vegetables — then complex carbs
•Take daily supplements: iron, B12, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, biotin
•Avoid carbonated drinks, alcohol, and sugary foods permanently
•Spices allowed after 1 month if tolerated. Avoid citrus fruits (mandarin, orange, grapefruit) for 1 month
•After 1 month: varied sports and more intense exercise allowed
💊
Healthy Eating Habits
Long-term strategies for success
•Small portions: Aim for 5–6 small meals daily
•Slow eating: Eating too fast leads to overeating — your stomach needs time to signal fullness
•Water timing: Drink at least 30 minutes before or after meals. Target 1.5–2 litres daily
•Protein first: Chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, protein shakes at every meal
•Vitamins: Iron, B12, calcium, vitamin D as prescribed. Zinc & biotin help prevent hair loss (months 3–9)
•Food diary: Track your intake for portion control and meal plan adherence
•Follow-ups: Regular appointments with your doctor and dietitian are essential
